Hiking in the Black Mountains and Toe River Valley near Burnsville, North Carolina is a very rewarding experience. The area has a wide variety of terrain to explore ranging from lush river valleys to majestic mountain ridges. At 6,684 foot elevation, Mount Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi. Numerous trails, including the spectacular and challenging Black Mountain Crest Trail, can be accessed from Mount Mitchell State Park located on the Blue Ridge Parkway near mile marker 355. Trails range from easy "walks" to advanced technical climbing. The bucolic rural country roads offer unique bicycling opportunities. The pristine rivers, streams and creeks offer some of the best trout and fly fishing spots in the eastern United States. The best way to discover and enjoy the area's trails is to become a member of North Carolina High Peaks Trail Association or by attending one of our scheduled hikes or monthly meetings.
