Fit, experienced hikers are invited to join the NC High Peaks Trail Association for a very strenuous hike over scenic Roan Mountain on Friday, Sept. 1.

The 5-mile jaunt will include an elevation change of 1,500 feet over very steep terrain and is not for novices. The outing will follow the Appalachian Trail between Hughes and Carver’s Gaps and will include a visit to the Roan summit and the site where the Cloudland Hotel once stood 100 years ago.

Hikers should meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Rose’s Shopping Center parking lot overlooking U.S. 19-E. The group will take a Yancey Transportation van to and from the hike for a donation of $5 per person. No dogs are allowed on the vans so if you want to bring your leashed pet you must provide your own transportation.

Bring snacks, water, lunch, hiking poles if you use them and rain gear if the forecast warrants.

Seating on the van is limited, so you must contact Hike Leader Jimmie Bowen at 252-450-5224 or jbowen6116@gmail.com by Thursday, Aug. 31 to reserve your spot.

As always, check the High Peaks Facebook page or website, www.nchighpeaks.org, for last-minute changes due to weather.
