Join the NC High Peaks Trail Association on Saturday, March 4 for one of two hikes that will pass over the Roan balds, known as some of the most spectacular terrain on the entire Appalachian Trail.

Hikers will get views like this from the Roan Balds if they join High Peaks for one of two hikes on March 4. Photo by Dennis Smith.

The longer of the two hikes will start at Roaring Creek Road, proceed up to the Overmountain Shelter, then follow the AT to Carver’s Gap for a distance of 7 miles and a 1,600-foot elevation gain. This hike is rated as very strenuous and should only be attempted by experienced hikers in excellent condition.

The second hike will be more moderate, starting and ending at Carver’s Gap. Hikers will pass over Jane Bald, with an option to continue to Grassy Ridge. The maximum distance will be 5.4 miles, with a climb of about 700 feet. Hikers will be able to turn around at any point and return to Carver’s Gap.

The groups will assemble on the Burnsville Town Square at 8:30 a.m., where transportation will be provided on Yancey County vans for a donation of $5, reservations required. No dogs are allowed on the vans, so if you want to bring your leashed pet you must provide your own transportation.

Bring several layers of warm clothes, foul weather gear, lunch, snacks, plenty of water and hiking poles if you use them. The weather is extremely changeable at high elevation, so be careful to come fully prepared.

For the long hike, please contact hike leader Dennis Smith at 284-4000 or dennissmith4141@gmail.com to make your reservation. For the moderate hike, please contact hike leader John Whitehouse at 682-3217 or trails@nchighpeaks.org to reserve a spot.

As always, check the High Peaks Facebook page or website, www.nchighpeaks.org,  for last-minute changes due to the weather.
